Subthalamus

The subthalamus is a region beneath the thalamus and lies directly above, dorsolater and caudal to the hypothalamus. It includes several clusters of nuclei of the ventral and rostral brainstem. The following nuclear groups are generally included in the subthalamus.


  • Subthalamic nucleus

  • Substantia nigra (compact, reticular & lateral portions)

  • Ventral Tegmental area

  • Zona incerta

  • Fields of Forel
