Basal Forebrain

The basal forebrain comprises several cellular groups of different sizes that are situated in the rostral and ventral aspect of the telencephalon. The nuclei usually considered together here are the caudate nucleus, putamen and globus pallidus, entopeduncular nucleus, the accumbens, islands of Calleja and substantia inominata, the paraolfactory cortex, septum, diagonal band of Broca, nuclei of the anterior commissure, and the lateral ventral portions of the hypothalamus.

  • Caudate nucleus

  • Putamen

  • Globus pallidus (medial & lateral divisions)

  • Entopeduncular nucleus

  • Septum

  • Accumbens

  • Nuclei of the anterior commisure

  • Islands of Calleja

  • Diagonal band of Broca

  • Substantia inominata

  • Paraolfactory cortex

  • Lateral and ventral extensions of the hypothalamus

In the three figures displayed below, these various nuclei can be identified.
