Head and body length of M. redmani is 50-80 mm, with a tail length of 4-16 mm and forearm length of 35-45 mm. Weights average 8-13 grams. M. redmani is various shades of brown, sometimes washed with gray.

This bat is distinguished from other bats by its dental features. It has an elongated muzzle and a long tongue with papillae. The cheek teeth are narrow and elongate. The tail of M. redmani projects about half its length beyond the edge of the interfemoral membrane.

M. redmani prefer to roost in large, deep caves with high humidity. When disturbed, the bat flies about emitting a metallic buzzing sound similar to that of a large beetle. There is no firm data on the feeding habits of M. redmani, but this species likely feeds on soft fruit or nectar and possibly some insects.

Roosts may be segregated by sex and the females produce only one young during each breeding season.

M. redmani is found in Cuba, Hispaniola, Puerto Rico, Jamaica, and S Bahama Isls.
